Updated: Full Hands on with the JVC DLA-HD950
Updated : We have just received the first full production sample of the new JVC DLA-HD950 DILA projector and are prepping the review room as we write. This is JVC’s latest high-end DILA machine that comes with a new clear motion drive frame interpolation technology and is THX and ISF Certification. Native contrast claims put it at 50,000:1 and we are itching to fully test just how good this new projector is compared to our resident reference HD750. Stay tuned for updates and the full review which will be published soon…
So with the review almost complete and due for publication very soon, what have we found?
Well the most pleasing aspect is that JVC have listened to the feedback we gave them last year when we covered the HD750.
The first point are some changes to the menu systems and in particular the calibration controls. On the HD750 the white balance controls had the custom options for fine tuning the greyscale, however each of the custom settings were at a default of 9300k and subtractive. We stated we would rather have a benchmark setting and controls that worked in the plus and negative. Well the engineers have given us just what we asked for with the new look white balance controls, we can select 6500k as a benchmark and the controls now have a zero point and work + and – which is what we want for speed and ease of use.
Another huge plus point is that as well as the THX mode, most of the preset now have reduced gamuts compared to last years model where every preset had a very wide gamut. This is a move in the right direction. The user preset is still wide, but that is deliberate as it works better with the CMS for a quicker and more accurate calibration – good stuff.
One slight issue is the Clear Motion Drive (CMD) function with 24fps material. As you can see in the video above it adds in artefacts that are very distracting, along with a sped up feel to film material. We go into it in more detail in the review for you.
So lots of positives and the review is coming very soon! Keep an eye on www.avforums.com/reviews
